MAESP is offering an opportunity to engage in a book study with Sarah Fiarman, co-author with Tracey Benson, of Unconscious Bias in Schools: A Developmental Approach to Exploring Race and Racism. She has written and consulted about school leadership, unconscious racial bias, and system-level improvement. Additional books authored by Sarah include Instructional Rounds in Education (co-author with Liz City, Richard Elmore, and Lee Teitel), the Data Wise series (contributing author), and Becoming a School Principal. All are published by Harvard Education Press.
Sarah became an educator out of a commitment to teach anti-racism to all students and ensure that black and brown students received the excellent education they are too often denied. Over the years, her aims have expanded to include a focus on helping white people (starting with herself) see the ways in which they perpetuate racial inequities and their responsibility to continually work to change these behaviors.
MAESP has engaged Sarah to provide four (4) 90-minute sessions over a 4 month period with a culminating session and panel presentation at the March 2022 Joint Annual Conference in Towson Maryland. Book study participants will be required to purchase their own copy of Unconscious Bias in Schools: A Developmental Approach to Exploring Race and Racism for reading and discussion. The schedule for readings, discussion, reflection, and interaction will be as follows:
Session #1: 12/7/2021, Introduction and Chapter 1
Session #2: 1/14/2022, Chapters 2 through 5
Session #3: 2/1/2022, Chapters 6 through 8
Session #4: 3/1/2022, Chapters 9 and 10
Register now to engage with Sarah and your Maryland colleagues. Member cost for this book study is $250.00. A $50.00 discount is available for each participant from a school or organization team of 3 as long as one registrant is a verified member of MAESP. Non-member cost is $300.00 for each registrant.
Participation in this professional learning opportunity supports PSEL Standards #2 and #3!
